About the Badge

The cap badge of 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards depicts the double-headed Habsburg imperial eagle inherited from the 1st King's Dragoon Guards. In 1896, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria became Colonel-in-Chief of the King's Dragoon Guards and granted the regiment the privilege of wearing the Habsburg double-headed eagle on its headdress. The eagle ceased to be worn during the First World War and was restored to the cap badge in 1937, before passing to 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards on amalgamation in 1959.

The design depicts a double-headed Austro-Hungarian imperial eagle, crowned and surmounted by the Austrian Imperial Crown, holding an orb and sceptre, with the Arms of the Austrian Empire on the central shield. It preserves one of the most distinctive cap-badge traditions in the British cavalry.
