The regiment was formed in September 1959 by merging The Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) and The Wiltshire Regiment (Duke of Edinburgh's). It served in the British Army until 1994, when it became part of The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment.

About the Badge
The National Army Museum records the badge as a silver cross patée, inherited from the Wiltshire Regiment, with a silver Chinese-style dragon from the Royal Berkshire Regiment. A double coil of naval rope surrounds the design, commemorating the marine services of the ancestor regiment, the 49th Foot.
