The Intelligence Corps was originally formed in 1914 and disbanded in 1929. The present Corps was formally established in July 1940 with the consent of King George VI. During the Second World War, its personnel supported intelligence work including field security, prisoner interrogation, aerial photography, signals traffic analysis and counter-intelligence, with members also serving in organisations such as the Special Operations Executive.

Today, the Intelligence Corps provides specialist intelligence support including operational intelligence, counter-intelligence and security, imagery intelligence, signals intelligence, human intelligence, cyber intelligence and open-source intelligence. Its motto, Manui Dat Cognitio Vires, translates as “Knowledge Gives Strength to the Arm”.
