About the Cypher
The Life Guards regimental cypher consists of the letters L and G, reversed and interlaced, beneath the Royal Crest: a crowned lion standing on a royal crown. A blue scroll below carries the regimental title, THE LIFE GUARDS. This version features St Edward's Crown, commonly known as the Queen's Crown and associated with the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The LG monogram identifies the regiment, rather than an individual Sovereign.
The Life Guards are the senior regiment of the British Army. Their origins lie in the mounted bodyguard that accompanied Charles II on his return from exile in 1660. The 1st and 2nd Regiments of Life Guards were formed in 1788 and amalgamated in 1922. Since 1992, The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals have served together within the Household Cavalry, each retaining its own regimental identity and traditions. Life Guards soldiers serve in armoured reconnaissance and mounted ceremonial roles, continuing the regiment's association with the Sovereign.
