The Royal Regiment of Artillery was formed on 26 May 1716, when two permanent companies of artillery were established at Woolwich by Royal Warrant of King George I. As one of the oldest and most distinguished regiments in the British Army, the Royal Regiment has provided artillery support and specialist firepower for more than three centuries, continually evolving to meet the changing demands of warfare.

Today, the Regiment delivers close support artillery, deep fires, air defence, surveillance, target acquisition and precision fires capabilities, remaining an essential component of the British Army's modern fighting force.
Unlike most regiments, the Royal Regiment of Artillery does not carry individual battle honours. Instead, it was granted the motto Ubique (“Everywhere”) by King William IV in 1832, recognising its service in virtually every campaign fought by the British Army. Together with its second motto, Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt (“Where Right and Glory Lead”), these honours reflect the Regiment’s remarkable history of continuous service and operational excellence.
This display frame features the Queen’s Crown pattern of the Royal Regiment of Artillery cap badge, representing the design worn throughout the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Introduced following her accession to the throne, the St Edward’s Crown became the standard crown used on British military insignia from 1953 until 2022, making this version of the cap badge familiar to generations of Royal Artillery soldiers.

About the Badge
The Royal Regiment of Artillery cap badge depicts a 9-pounder muzzle-loading gun, one of the Regiment’s most enduring symbols and a reminder of its long history as the British Army’s artillery arm. The gun represents the Regiment’s unwavering commitment to providing accurate and decisive fire support wherever British soldiers serve.
Above the gun sits the Queen’s Crown (St Edward’s Crown), identifying this as the pattern of the cap badge worn throughout the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Introduced in 1953, the Queen’s Crown remained the standard crown used on British Army insignia for almost seventy years and became synonymous with generations of Royal Artillery soldiers who served during the Cold War and on operations around the world.
