The Royal Tank Regiment's history began with the Heavy Section of the Machine Gun Corps in 1916. It received official Tank Corps status in 1917 and became the Royal Tank Regiment in 1939. The British Army identifies the RTR as the oldest tank unit in the world; its role is Armour and its motto is “Fear Naught”.
