The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment Cap Badge

Official MOD-Licensed Military Reproduction

Celebrate the proud heritage of The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment (RGBW) with this officially licensed reproduction cap badge.

Formed in April 1994 through the amalgamation of The Gloucestershire Regiment and The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment (Berkshire and Wiltshire), the new regiment brought together centuries of military tradition associated with Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire.

Through its predecessor regiments, RGBW inherited the histories and traditions of some of the British Army's oldest infantry regiments. The Gloucestershire lineage included the famous 28th and 61st Regiments of Foot, while the Berkshire and Wiltshire heritage was inherited through The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment.

Despite existing under the RGBW title for little more than a decade, the regiment saw significant service. Its soldiers deployed to Bosnia, Cyprus, Northern Ireland and Kosovo, as well as undertaking detachments to the Falkland Islands and ceremonial duties in the United Kingdom.

On 22 July 2005, the regiment became The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry, joining the Light Division. Its soldiers subsequently served operationally in Afghanistan.

On 1 February 2007, the regiment became part of The Rifles, with its regular battalion contributing to the formation of 1st Battalion, The Rifles, ensuring that its heritage and traditions continue within the modern British Army.

This precision reproduction faithfully recreates the distinctive RGBW cap badge, featuring the silver-coloured Maltese Cross, gold-coloured Sphinx and “EGYPT” tablet associated with the regiment. It is produced using high-definition 3D printing and individually hand-finished in the United Kingdom.

About the Badge

The cap badge of The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment combines distinctive symbols inherited from its predecessor regiments, creating a design representing the military heritage of Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire.

The Maltese Cross

The main body of the badge takes the form of a silver-coloured Maltese Cross, representing the Wiltshire heritage inherited through The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment (Berkshire and Wiltshire).

The cross provides the striking background to the badge and forms one of its most immediately recognisable features.

The Sphinx and “EGYPT” Tablet

Above the cross sits a gold-coloured Sphinx resting on a tablet bearing the word “EGYPT”.

This famous distinction was inherited from The Gloucestershire Regiment and ultimately traces its origins to the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot and its service during the Egyptian campaign of 1801.

The regiment fought at the Battle of Alexandria on 21 March 1801, an action that became one of the defining episodes in the history of the Gloucestershire lineage.

The Sphinx and “EGYPT” subsequently became enduring symbols of that heritage and were retained when The Gloucestershire Regiment amalgamated with The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment in 1994.

The Famous Back Badge

RGBW also continued one of the most distinctive traditions associated with the Gloucestershire lineage — wearing a second Sphinx and “EGYPT” badge on the rear of the headdress.

The tradition is associated with the 28th Foot's service at Alexandria in 1801. According to longstanding regimental tradition, the distinction recalls the regiment fighting while attacked from both the front and rear during the battle.

The back badge became one of the most recognisable traditions associated with the Glosters and was retained by RGBW.

The Berkshire Heritage

The Berkshire contribution to the regiment's identity was represented through additional items of regimental dress rather than a separate element of the principal metal cap badge.

These included the distinctive red Brandywine Flash, worn behind the cap badge, and the China Dragon displayed on regimental buttons — traditions inherited through The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment from the Berkshire lineage.

Together, the silver Maltese Cross, gold Sphinx and “EGYPT” tablet, alongside the regiment's other inherited distinctions, created a regimental identity that brought together the histories of all three counties represented in the RGBW title.

Although The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment existed under that name for a relatively short period, the heritage represented by its badge stretches back for centuries.

Today, the badge remains a distinctive symbol of the regiment and of the generations of soldiers whose traditions ultimately became part of The Rifles.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Precision Military Emblems, our military badges and emblems are produced using advanced precision 3D printing technology to create highly detailed reproductions of military insignia. Unlike many manufacturers who prioritise speed, we use refined print settings and slower production processes to minimise visible layer lines and maximise accuracy. Each badge is carefully finished and quality inspected to ensure exceptional detail, depth, and definition.

When choosing a 3D military display, it is important to consider the accuracy of the badge reproduction, the quality of the craftsmanship, and the materials used throughout the display. Look for highly detailed reproductions rather than mass-produced replicas. You should also ensure the manufacturer is authorised to reproduce military insignia where required. Precision Military Emblems operates under official Ministry of Defence (MOD) licensing where applicable, ensuring displays are produced responsibly and to a professional standard.

All Precision Military Emblems displays are individually made to order. Standard production lead times are typically 5–10 working days before dispatch. Because we use precision 3D printing with enhanced quality settings, production takes longer than many standard manufacturing methods. Once dispatched, UK orders are usually delivered within 1–3 working days. Tracking information is provided with every order.
