The regiment was formed in June 1969 from The South Wales Borderers and The Welch Regiment, served in several British Army operations, and was amalgamated with The Royal Welch Fusiliers on 1 March 2006 to form The Royal Welsh.

The cap badge of the Royal Regiment of Wales features the Prince of Wales's Feathers — three ostrich feathers rising from a coronet — with the scroll below bearing the motto Ich Dien (“I Serve”). The design reflects the regiment's Welsh identity and royal association.
